Assignment 6
Growing up, October was always a month to look forward to. I celebrated my birthday every year on the 28th and continued the festivities days after, on Halloween. Picking out the most creative costume was always the best part. Never being the princess type, I chose any costume that involved fake blood, fangs, and wigs. It was tradition to go trick-or-treating with all my cousins. We met up at grandma's house. That's when the photo shoot began; the worst part. My uncle would drive his truck through the suburbs, allowing for us to ride on the tailgate. This part always brought out the most excitement. That kind of freedom was more than a kid could handle. Our mothers' scowled when we jumped off too soon, while the truck was still moving. As soon as our feet hit the pavement, it was a dead sprint to the front door, a race to get there first. Like it had been my whole life, I struggled to keep up with the boys. My legs weren't fast enough to make it to every house. At the end of the night, our pillowcases of candy would be scattered all over the floor. After trading away all my Almond Joys and Fireballs, I sorted and counted every single piece, jealous my brother always came up with more. These days, Halloween is celebrated a little different. No longer do I run from door to door trick-or-treating for candy. That tradition is long past. Every year when Halloween comes around, the boys pick out the cheapest costume they can get and the girls pick the one that reveals the most. Apparently, Halloween is the one night girls can dress like a sluts and get away with it. Halloween no longer has anything to do with candy. People are more worried about which party they'll be attending and how drunk they are going to get. Taking hundreds of pictures is about the only tradition that remains the same. My view on Halloween is completely different than it was ten years ago. Although Halloween means something different now, I still look forward to it every year.
